Mijas Costa can work well for a hen or stag weekend built around beaches, a villa or apartment, golf and a day at Max Beach. Accommodation may cost less than in Marbella or Puerto Banús, but the area is spread out. La Cala de Mijas, Riviera del Sol and Calahonda are separate places, and many properties are uphill from the coast.
Max Beach is the main reason to choose Riviera del Sol. It combines a seasonal adults-only pool area, beach beds, food and date-specific events at one seafront venue. MAO, next door, is a separate Asian restaurant that works well for dinner. Both belong to Metro Grupo and are the only restaurants recommended in this guide.
This is not the right base for a weekend centred on big clubs. Mijas Costa is less walkable than Puerto Marina in Benalmádena and has nothing comparable to the concentration of nightlife in Puerto Banús. It makes more sense for a slower coastal trip, provided the organiser checks the exact accommodation pin and budgets properly for transport.
Is Mijas Costa right for your group?
Mijas Costa is a sensible choice for:
Hens who want a beach or pool day without paying to stay in central Marbella.
Stags planning golf, beach time and a good dinner rather than two nights of clubbing.
Mixed-age parties looking for a sociable weekend with some unstructured time.
Groups comparing larger apartments or villas with the cost of Marbella accommodation.
Anyone happy to book taxis or a minibus when the property is away from the seafront.
A party that wants Max Beach to be the main daytime booking, not one stop in an overloaded itinerary.
It is less suitable for:
Anyone expecting to walk everywhere.
A party whose priority is Puerto Banús nightlife on both nights.
Guests who want a large choice of restaurants and bars within a few streets.
An out-of-season trip planned around the Max Beach pool without a backup.
Anyone choosing accommodation from the word “Mijas” alone. A listing may be in Mijas Pueblo, Las Lagunas or a coastal urbanisation several kilometres from the intended venue.
Mijas Costa or Marbella?
Choose Mijas Costa if you want:
A relaxed beach-and-villa weekend.
A chance of finding better-value shared accommodation.
A full pool day at Max Beach.
Golf, coastal walks and beach time rather than several city-centre bookings.
A base between Marbella and Fuengirola, with one planned visit to either.
Choose Marbella or Puerto Banús if you want:
Marina bars and several major nightclubs in the same general area.
A Puerto Banús yacht charter as the central activity.
A nightlife-led weekend involving tickets, guest lists or tables.
More high-end hotels close to late venues.
Fewer journeys between Mijas Costa and Marbella at night.
Do not assume Mijas Costa will be cheap. Max Beach is a higher-spend venue, summer villas can be expensive and repeated taxi journeys soon add up. The saving is more likely to come from the accommodation and an itinerary that stays mostly local. If you sleep in Calahonda but travel to Puerto Banús every day, much of the difference may disappear in transport costs.
Where to stay in Mijas Costa
Riviera del Sol: closest to Max Beach and MAO
Riviera del Sol is the obvious base when Max Beach is central to the weekend. The venue is on the seafront at Carretera de Cádiz, kilometre 198, with MAO next door.
Some properties near the coast are walkable, but much of Riviera climbs steeply inland from the A-7. Check the actual route, gradient, crossings and street lighting before booking. A villa that looks close on a map may still need a taxi, particularly after dark.
Choose Riviera for access to Max Beach and MAO, not for a large local nightlife district.
La Cala de Mijas: the easiest all-round base
La Cala feels more like a small town than a residential development. Its beach, seafront paths and compact centre make it the most practical part of Mijas Costa for guests who want to go out on foot during the day.
The official tourism site describes La Cala Beach as accessible on foot, by car and by bus. Max Beach is in Riviera del Sol rather than La Cala, so allow for road transport on the pool or dinner day.
La Cala is a good fit for a mixed-age hen group or a stag party that wants ordinary beach time and local drinks alongside one organised day. It is less convenient if most evening plans are in Marbella.
Calahonda: more accommodation, but check the pin
Calahonda covers a wide area at the western end of Mijas Costa. Lower Calahonda can be useful for the beaches and A-7 bus corridor; upper Calahonda is hilly and far more dependent on taxis or a hire car.
The Calahonda–Riviera beach is officially listed with access on foot, by car and by bus. That does not mean every Calahonda property is within a sensible walk. Test the route from the property entrance to the beach, supermarket and proposed taxi pick-up point before paying a deposit.
Calahonda can suit a villa-based hen or stag weekend, but transport needs to be part of the budget from the beginning.
Mijas Pueblo and Las Lagunas
Mijas Pueblo is the white village in the hills. It can be included as a visit, but it is not a beach base and the weekend cannot be organised on foot from there to Max Beach.
Las Lagunas is the inland commercial and residential part of the municipality beside Fuengirola. Accommodation there creates a different trip from staying on the coast.
Ask the host to confirm in writing whether a property is in Mijas Pueblo, Las Lagunas, La Cala, Riviera del Sol or Calahonda. “Mijas” is not precise enough for planning transfers.
Max Beach: pool and beach day
Max Beach is a seafront restaurant with a seasonal pool area and beach beds in Riviera del Sol. It is not a conventional nightclub, and a restaurant table is not the same booking as a pool bed or cabana.
The venue’s current English-language information says:
The pool area is strictly for guests aged 18 and over.
The pool normally operates from spring to early autumn, with exact dates affected by weather and events.
A sunbed booking includes the bed, towel service and pool access.
There is normally no minimum spend in the pool area, although one may apply during a special event.
Food and drinks can be ordered beside the pool.
Reservations are strongly recommended for beds, restaurant tables and special events.
Groups of 11 or more should contact the venue directly.
Check the booking page for the chosen date, as a normal pool day and a promoted event can have different prices, entry conditions and minimum spends. Do not book based on an old social-media post.
Who Max Beach suits
For a hen party, Max Beach works best as a long afternoon with a reserved base for swimming, lunch and drinks. Stag groups may prefer it as a slower day after golf or a late Friday night. It can also suit a mixed party because guests can dip in and out rather than committing to a strenuous activity.
The pool is not suitable for anyone under 18. It will also disappoint a party expecting a low-cost public-beach day or guaranteed high-volume entertainment. The mood depends on the date and event programme.
Large stag groups should contact the venue before collecting money. Give the true headcount and occasion, then ask whether the full party will be accepted in the intended area. An online bed booking alone does not settle the group policy.
What to confirm before paying
Ask Max Beach for:
The current price of the chosen bed, cabana or zone.
The number of guests covered by each reservation.
Exactly what is included, including access and towel service.
Any event ticket or minimum spend applying that day.
The arrival deadline and late-arrival policy.
Its rules on hen and stag groups, matching outfits and accessories.
Deposit, balance, amendment and cancellation terms.
The weather policy if the pool or beach area cannot operate.
Dress requirements for the pool, beach and restaurant.
Eating at Max Beach
The Max Beach restaurant is separate from the pool-bed booking. It opens daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and asks diners to wear smart-casual clothing. Swimwear is not allowed in the restaurant.
The current pool menu covers sharing plates, salads, sushi, pizza, grilled meat and vegetarian dishes. Useful examples include tacos from €13.50, a Wagyu burger at €26.50 and pizzas from €15. These are budgeting references, not fixed package prices, and should be checked against the live menu before money is collected.
Max Beach also publishes set menus at €75 and €100 per person, with a 10% service charge not included. The €75 menu has shared starters, a choice of main, shared sides and a dessert-and-fruit platter. The €100 version adds a wider selection of starters and higher-priced main-course choices.
Neither menu automatically includes drinks, a pool bed, an event ticket or transport. Ask whether the chosen menu is available for the date and headcount, whether everyone must order it and how allergies or other dietary requirements will be handled.
Choose Max Beach for the main meal when the seafront setting and the option to stay in the same venue after the pool matter more than keeping costs down. It is a less comfortable fit for a tight budget or for guests who want to return home and change fully before dinner.
MAO: Asian food next to Max Beach
MAO is an Asian restaurant beside Max Beach in Riviera del Sol. It is a separate venue with its own menu and booking route, not another part of the pool area.
The current official site lists daily opening from 16:00 to 00:00, so MAO is an evening choice rather than lunch during a pool session. Its menu includes dim sum, steamed buns, noodles, stir-fries, duck dishes and vegetarian options.
Current prices include:
Starters from €7.50 to €17.50.
Chow mein from €18 to €24, depending on the protein.
Pad Thai from €20 to €23.
Chop suey from €17 to €23.
Several chicken, pork and curry dishes from €17 to €22.
Half Peking duck dishes at €32.
A MAO Banquet at €42.50 per person, with a minimum of two people.
The banquet gives organisers a useful starting figure, but the two-person minimum does not confirm that the same arrangement applies to a large hen or stag table. Ask whether it can be served to the full party, how dishes are divided between tables, what substitutions are possible and whether drinks or service are extra.
When MAO works better
MAO makes sense for an informal sharing dinner after guests have returned from the beach or changed at the accommodation. Its published banquet price is lower than the Max Beach set menus, and the location is convenient for anyone staying around Riviera del Sol.
It may be difficult for a party with several serious soy, sesame, nut, shellfish or gluten allergies. Allergens are marked on the menu, but send all requirements before booking and ask the restaurant about substitutions and cross-contamination.
Confirm the table arrangement, any required menu, deposit, final-number deadline, cancellation terms, decorations, dress expectations and payment method. Do not assume the restaurant will split the bill.
Max Beach or MAO?
Choose Max Beach when the venue is also the daytime activity. It suits a pool or beach booking followed by lunch, drinks or an early dinner. The seafront setting is the main advantage, but the pool is seasonal and the published set menus cost more.
Choose MAO for a separate evening meal with Asian sharing dishes and a lower published starting price. It works particularly well after everyone has gone back to shower and change, but it does not replace a beach-club day or a late-night club.
Using both during one weekend need not feel repetitive: book MAO for Friday dinner and Max Beach for Saturday afternoon. Doing both on the same day is possible, but it means remaining in the same complex for many hours and managing two separate reservations.
Hen-party ideas in Mijas Costa
A pool day and dinner in Riviera del Sol
Stay in Riviera del Sol or lower Calahonda, keep the morning free and reserve the appropriate beds at Max Beach. After the pool, return to the accommodation to change before dinner at MAO. This version keeps journeys to a minimum and leaves room for anyone who wants an early night.
It can suit a mixed-age party, provided everyone using the pool is over 18 and happy to spend much of the day there. Non-drinkers still have swimming, food and time by the sea rather than being committed to a drinks-only booking.
A La Cala beach weekend
Accommodation near central La Cala gives guests more freedom during the day. Use the public beach and coastal path for the unbooked parts of the weekend, then arrange a return vehicle for one afternoon at Max Beach.
The main celebration meal
Book the Max Beach restaurant if the meal and seafront setting are the focus of the evening. Choose MAO for a more informal dinner based on sharing dishes and a lower published banquet price. Do not advertise entertainment at either venue unless it is confirmed for the date.
Stag-party ideas in Mijas Costa
Golf and a local dinner
Mijas has several golf courses, so the area can work well for a golf-led stag. Arrange the course, tee time, club hire, handicap requirements, format and transport directly with the chosen provider.
MAO is a straightforward choice for sharing food after the round. Max Beach is better suited to a longer, higher-spend meal by the sea.
Villa, beach and pool
A villa in Calahonda or Riviera del Sol gives the group shared space, but check that the property accepts stag parties and read the visitor and noise rules before paying. A private pool does not automatically allow outside guests, loud music or a party.
Max Beach provides a structured Saturday without adding an adventure activity. For a large all-male party, confirm the booking area and entry conditions with the venue before collecting deposits.
A quieter stag weekend
Mijas Costa is better suited to stags interested in golf, beach time, dinner and drinks at the property within its rules than to those expecting a strip of major clubs. If Puerto Banús matters, organise one night there and book the return journey in advance.
Beaches and lower-cost daytime plans
Not every part of the weekend needs a ticket. Mijas has 12 kilometres of coastline, and the official tourism site describes a coastal footpath running past beaches, watchtowers and leisure areas.
Simple options include:
A morning on La Cala Beach before the main booking.
A walk along an open section of the coastal path.
An afternoon on the public beach at Calahonda or Riviera.
A short trip to Mijas Pueblo, with transport arranged both ways.
Time at the accommodation pool, subject to the property’s rules on visitors, noise and glass.
Check the route before setting off rather than assuming the entire coastal path is uninterrupted. Works, repairs and weather can affect individual sections, and cyclists are restricted at certain times. Beach flags and lifeguard instructions take priority over the itinerary.
The beach is free, but loungers, food, water activities and transport are separate. No watersports or boat provider is included here because current insurance, capacity and booking terms would need to be checked first.
Nightlife in Mijas Costa
Mijas Costa is better for restaurant-led evenings and local bars than for a major-club itinerary. Max Beach runs selected pool parties, restaurant shows and special events, but the programme is date-specific. A normal pool or dinner reservation should not be presented as an event booking.
For larger clubs, groups can travel west to Marbella and Puerto Banús or east towards Fuengirola and Benalmádena. Treat that as a planned night out rather than assuming several late taxis will be easy to find.
Before paying for an external venue, confirm:
The event and music on the chosen date.
Acceptance of the full hen or stag party.
Ticket, guest-list or table terms, including deposits and last entry.
Dress code, minimum age and physical identification requirements.
The return pick-up time and exact meeting point.
This guide does not recommend restaurants outside Metro Grupo. Max Beach and MAO are the only dining recommendations included.
A realistic three-day Mijas Costa hen weekend
Friday: arrival and dinner at MAO
Book an airport transfer with enough luggage space, then leave time for delayed flights and check-in. MAO works well for a sharing dinner that late arrivals can join without the rest of the party losing a ticketed booking. Keep the remainder of the night local.
Saturday: Max Beach
Have a slow morning and arrive at the confirmed time for the Max Beach bed or cabana. Order from the pool menu or make a separate restaurant reservation. Leave enough time to return to the accommodation and change. Stay for a confirmed event if it suits the party; otherwise, a relaxed local evening is more sensible than adding a long transfer simply to fill the schedule.
Sunday: La Cala and departure
Plan around checkout and the flight. A walk by the coast or a few hours at La Cala Beach is easy to shorten if traffic builds. Avoid another pool or water booking if there will be nowhere to shower before the airport.
A realistic three-day Mijas Costa stag weekend
Friday: villa check-in and MAO
Go straight to the accommodation, make sure everyone understands the property rules and book MAO for dinner. The banquet is a useful budgeting reference, subject to the restaurant confirming that it is available for the full party and explaining any extras.
Saturday: choose golf, the beach or Max Beach
Pick one main daytime plan: a pre-arranged round of golf, a public-beach morning or a confirmed Max Beach pool booking. Trying to do all three will make the day rushed.
Use the Max Beach restaurant for the main dinner if the group wants the seafront setting, or return to MAO if a different selection of dishes has been agreed. Anyone continuing to Puerto Banús should have club entry and return transport arranged separately; the dinner booking secures neither.
Sunday: a straightforward departure day
Use the accommodation pool within its rules, take a short coastal walk or have lunch if the flight time allows. Keep drinking and checkout plans sensible for the journey to the airport.
Getting to Mijas Costa
Mijas Costa is reached by road along the A-7. Journey times depend on traffic and on whether the property is in Calahonda, Riviera del Sol, La Cala, Las Lagunas or Mijas Pueblo.
For a large arrival party, a pre-booked minibus is usually simpler than dividing passengers and luggage between cars. Give the transfer company the full address, entrance instructions, flight details and suitcase count. Check that the quoted vehicle can carry everyone and their luggage together.
There is no railway station in Calahonda, Riviera del Sol or La Cala. The C1 line reaches Fuengirola, followed by a bus or taxi to the accommodation. That can work for one or two people travelling light, but it is rarely the easiest option for a large party.
Official Mijas transport information lists buses between La Cala, Marbella, Fuengirola and Calahonda. The M-220 currently serves Fuengirola, La Cala and Calahonda on its route between Las Lagunas and Marbella. Timetables change and the bus will not solve the final uphill journey to every villa, so check the live route and last service before relying on it for an evening booking.
Walking, taxis and group transport
The most common mistake is treating “Mijas Costa” as if everything were nearby. A few rules make the planning easier:
Stay in lower Riviera del Sol if the weekend centres on Max Beach and MAO, but check that the walking route is genuinely practical.
Choose central La Cala if being able to walk to the beach and a small town centre matters most.
Expect some taxi journeys from a Calahonda villa unless the exact pin proves otherwise.
Never walk beside the A-7 or use an unsafe crossing because two places look close on a map.
For 11 or more passengers, compare the cost of one organised vehicle with several taxis and set a clear return pick-up point.
Allow extra time on summer weekends and during large events. More than one organiser should keep the driver’s details in case a phone runs out of battery.
What should the group budget for?
Mijas Costa may reduce the accommodation cost, but the full budget still needs to cover:
Accommodation, deposit and any cleaning or late check-in charge.
Airport transfers with luggage space.
Local taxis or a minibus.
Max Beach beds or cabanas at the live rate.
Food and drinks during the pool day.
Dinner at Max Beach or MAO.
One paid activity, if planned.
A contingency for changes or separate late-night journeys.
Current menu prices provide a few useful reference points:
Max Beach set menus: €75 or €100 per person, with the stated 10% service charge not included.
Max Beach pool menu: tacos from €13.50 and a Wagyu burger at €26.50.
MAO Banquet: €42.50 per person, with a published minimum of two people.
MAO noodle and stir-fry dishes: broadly €17–€26 on the current menu.
These figures are not a package. Drinks, transport, pool beds, event tickets, deposits and extras have to be priced separately. Recheck the menus before publishing or taking payment.
