For eight or more people, a pre-booked minibus is usually the simplest way to get from Málaga Airport to Marbella. Everyone travels together, the driver goes to the accommodation address and there is less risk of running out of boot space for a weekend's worth of luggage.
The Avanza airport coach costs considerably less and makes sense for groups staying near Marbella centre. Taxis are useful when flights are split or plans change at the last minute, but a full hen or stag party will need several vehicles unless larger cars have been arranged in advance.
The accommodation address matters as much as the group size. Marbella stretches a long way along the coast, and a transfer to the Old Town is not the same journey as one to Puerto Banús, San Pedro de Alcántara or Cancelada.
The short answer
| Option | Typical journey to central Marbella | Current cost guide | Best for | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-booked private minibus | Around 40-55 minutes in normal traffic | Published examples start at roughly €6-€9 per person when a 13- or 19-seat vehicle is full; obtain a firm quote | Groups of 8-20+, villas, late arrivals and substantial luggage | Must be booked ahead, with vehicle size, luggage space and supplements confirmed |
| Airport taxi rank | Around 40-55 minutes in normal traffic | Allow roughly €65-€90 per standard taxi to central Marbella, depending on the tariff, route, tolls, traffic and luggage | Smaller parties, split arrivals and last-minute changes | Eight people generally need at least two standard taxis and may need more for luggage |
| Avanza airport coach | About 40 minutes to Marbella bus station on the current timetable | €6.48-€9.30 per person to Marbella, depending on the service | Daytime or evening arrivals staying near Marbella centre | Not door to door; most groups need taxis from the bus station |
These are budgeting figures rather than quotes. The exact address, traffic, time of travel, motorway tolls, luggage and vehicle availability can all affect the final cost.
Travel times depend on where you are staying
The airport journey is often described as a straightforward 40-minute drive. That may be possible to the eastern side of Marbella or the centre when the roads are clear, but accommodation farther west takes longer.
| Accommodation area | Allow in ordinary traffic | What may cause delays |
|---|---|---|
| Marbella centre and Old Town | Around 40-55 minutes | Traffic approaching Marbella and restricted access near the Old Town |
| Golden Mile | Around 45-60 minutes | Congestion on the A-7 and busy local roads |
| Puerto Banús and Nueva Andalucía | Around 50-65 minutes | Traffic around Río Verde, Puerto Banús and Nueva Andalucía |
| San Pedro de Alcántara | Around 55-70 minutes | A-7 traffic west of Puerto Banús |
| Cancelada | Around 60-75 minutes | Coastal traffic and access to the particular urbanisation |
Option 1: a private minibus
A private minibus normally becomes the most practical option at around eight passengers. The driver meets the party at the airport and travels directly to the accommodation, avoiding a second journey from Marbella bus station with suitcases.
It is particularly useful for:
villas and apartments away from Marbella bus station;
Puerto Banús, Nueva Andalucía, San Pedro and Cancelada;
flights landing late at night;
parties carrying large cases, golf clubs or other bulky items;
keeping the whole arrival under one booking.
It may not be the cheapest choice for a daytime flight and accommodation close to central Marbella. In that situation, compare the full minibus quote with the coach fare plus local taxis.
Current large-group transfer examples
Malaga Transfer publishes indicative per-person minibus fares to Marbella and Puerto Banús. Its current page lists Marbella from €8.35 per person in a 13-passenger minibus and €6 per person in a 19-passenger vehicle. For Puerto Banús, the published starting figures are €9.65 and €6.60 per person. The company states that prices depend on availability.
The same page is inconsistent about capacity. Different sections refer to 12-, 13-, 19- and 22-passenger vehicles, while the provider's current terms list 12- and 18-passenger Mercedes Sprinters and larger buses for 26 or 54 people. Ask for the legal passenger capacity of the actual vehicle in writing.
The minibus page states that the standard luggage provision is one large case per passenger and that a trailer can be added when needed. If the party has cabin cases, golf clubs, decorations or more than one suitcase each, include the complete luggage count in the quote request.
Transfer Millán Málaga gives a useful comparison for up to eight passengers. It currently publishes minivan prices from €104.40 to Marbella, €117.43 to Puerto Banús and €137.16 to Cancelada. VAT is included, but the page says AP-7 tolls are paid separately to the driver. The final amount still needs to be checked for the travel date, pickup time, luggage and address.
These examples show how quotes are structured; they are not a ranking of transfer companies. Compare at least two written quotes using the same passenger, luggage and journey details.
Villas and difficult addresses
Send a map pin with the written address. Some villas sit inside gated developments, on narrow streets or along unmade roads. A provider's terms may allow the driver to stop at the nearest safe and legal point if the vehicle cannot reach the door.
This can affect properties in Nueva Andalucía, the hills above Marbella and some developments around Cancelada. Resolve access before paying, particularly if the group will be arriving with a lot of luggage.
Option 2: taxis from Málaga Airport
The official airport taxi rank is the easiest option when nothing has been booked. It suits smaller parties, split arrivals and last-minute changes.
For a large hen or stag group, luggage is usually the problem. The minimum number of taxis may have enough passenger seats without enough boot space for every case.
How many taxis does a group need?
| Group size | Minimum with standard four-passenger taxis | More realistic with one large case each |
|---|---|---|
| 8 | 2 taxis | 2-3 taxis |
| 10 | 3 taxis | 3 taxis, possibly 4 with bulky luggage |
| 12 | 3 taxis | 4 taxis may be safer |
| 16 | 4 taxis | 5 or more may be needed |
Larger taxis do operate, but there is no guarantee that a suitable vehicle will be waiting when the flight lands. Reserve a minivan or minibus if travelling together matters.
What does a taxi cost?
Aena's current Málaga Airport taxi page publishes three tariffs for journeys starting at the airport. The kilometre rate is currently €1 during ordinary working weekdays, €1.21 during specified evenings, weekends and public holidays, and €1.38 during the highest night and holiday periods. Aena also lists a €0.56 supplement for each case carried in the boot, alongside limited supplements for certain journeys.
Using these rates and the normal road distance, allow roughly €65-€90 for one standard taxi to central Marbella. Puerto Banús, San Pedro and Cancelada are farther west and will cost more. The route, traffic, waiting, tolls and luggage also affect the meter.
Ask the rank dispatcher or driver for an estimate before leaving. A fixed price quoted in an old travel article should not be treated as a current airport fare.
For eight people travelling to central Marbella, two standard taxis may therefore cost roughly €130-€180 before allowing for another vehicle if the luggage does not fit. At that point, compare the total with a private minibus quote.
Keeping several taxis on the same route
Send the full address to the group chat before setting off and give it to every driver. A villa name on its own may not identify the correct entrance. Put at least one person with mobile data in each car, and agree that nobody changes the destination during the journey.
If one taxi arrives first, that passenger can confirm the right gate or entrance for the remaining cars. This is helpful in large urbanisations with several access points.
Option 3: the Avanza airport coach
The Avanza coach is the cheapest practical option for a large party, particularly when the accommodation is in or close to central Marbella.
Aena confirms that Avanza connects Málaga Airport with Marbella bus station and also runs an airport service towards Estepona. The summer timetable dated 26 June 2026 showed frequent airport-to-Marbella journeys taking about 40 minutes. At the time of checking, departures ran from 08:10 until 00:20, although the schedule can change outside summer.
Current coach fares
Avanza's airport fare sheet dated 1 June 2026 lists:
Málaga Airport to Marbella: €6.48 on an ordinary service;
Málaga Airport to Marbella Multimedia: €8.70;
Málaga Airport to Marbella Express: €9.30;
Málaga Airport to San Pedro de Alcántara: €7.68;
Málaga Airport to Estepona: €10.24 ordinary, €12 Multimedia or €12.50 Express.
Avanza advertises a 10% discount for groups of 5-25 passengers. Check that it is offered for the selected airport journey before including it in the budget.
At the published fares, 12 tickets to Marbella cost €77.76-€111.60 before any group discount or booking fee. Remember to add the taxis between Marbella bus station and the accommodation.
Luggage on the coach
Avanza's current conditions allow each passenger to carry two cases in the luggage hold with a combined weight of 30 kg. Extra and bulky items depend on available space and may need to be declared and paid for separately.
This allowance is generally more useful than the boot space in several standard taxis. Even so, organise the boarding: give one person the tickets and ask another to count passengers and cases.
Where the coach works well
The coach makes most sense when:
the full party lands in time for the same departure;
the accommodation is close to central Marbella;
price matters more than door-to-door convenience;
everyone can manage their own luggage;
the group is prepared to take taxis from Marbella bus station.
It is less convenient for the Golden Mile, Puerto Banús and Nueva Andalucía because the standard Marbella service finishes at the bus station. A large party will then need several local taxis.
Some airport services continue to San Pedro or Estepona, but the stopping pattern is not the same on every departure. The timetable also includes journeys that require a change in Marbella. Search the exact airport-to-destination route rather than assuming a Marbella coach will continue west.
Should the coach be booked in advance?
Yes, especially in summer when the party needs seats on the same departure. Avanza's conditions state that online tickets are issued to named passengers and identification may be requested. Keep the tickets ready before reaching the coach rather than trying to buy 12 or 16 seats from the driver.
There is no direct train to Marbella
Málaga Airport has a railway station, but the C1 line ends at Fuengirola. Aena gives the airport-to-Fuengirola journey as approximately 34 minutes.
Reaching Marbella then requires a bus or taxis from Fuengirola. With a large party and weekend luggage, this is normally slower and more awkward than taking the direct airport coach. The train is mainly a fallback if other plans fail or some guests are staying farther east on the Costa del Sol.
Choosing by accommodation area
Marbella centre and Old Town
The coach offers the best value if the accommodation is central and the flight arrives within its operating hours. Check the final walking route before booking: Marbella bus station is uphill and outside the Old Town.
A private transfer is easier for a villa, a beachfront property with heavy luggage or an Old Town address with restricted vehicle access. Ask exactly where the driver can stop.
Golden Mile
A private transfer is normally more convenient. Taking the coach means arranging more vehicles for the final section from Marbella bus station. Airport taxis can suit a smaller party, but calculate the required boot space as well as the number of passenger seats.
Puerto Banús and Nueva Andalucía
Most groups will find a door-to-door minibus easier. It avoids changing to local taxis in Marbella and keeps the party together.
The coach can still lower the cost, but only after adding the final taxi journeys. Compare the complete route rather than the coach fare alone.
San Pedro de Alcántara
Selected Avanza services currently include San Pedro, so the coach can work here. Check the exact departure and stopping pattern for the travel date. A private transfer remains simpler for villas outside the centre, late arrivals and parties with substantial luggage.
Cancelada
A private minibus is the practical option for most groups. Cancelada lies farther west, and many properties are inside residential developments rather than beside an intercity bus stop.
The public-transport alternative usually involves a coach towards San Pedro or Estepona followed by another bus or taxi. With 8-16 people and cases, much of the saving can disappear on the extra leg.
Late flights, delays and split arrivals
If the flight lands after the last coach
Use airport taxis or book a private transfer. Ask about night supplements and make sure the booking shows the scheduled landing time, not the time the group hopes to leave baggage reclaim.
If the flight is delayed
Give the transfer company the flight number and read its flight-monitoring policy. Check how much waiting is included after landing and what happens once that period ends.
“Flight monitored” does not always mean unlimited free waiting. Passport control and baggage delays may continue long after the aircraft lands, so save the driver's number before departure.
If people arrive on different flights
One minibus works only when the arrivals are close enough and the company has agreed to wait. Keeping 14 people at the airport for two hours to save one fare is rarely a good start to the trip.
For flights with a long gap between them, use one minibus for the main party and a taxi or smaller transfer for the later arrivals. Record which passenger is on each booking.
The luggage problem most groups underestimate
An eight-seat vehicle does not necessarily carry eight people and eight large suitcases. Passenger and luggage capacities are separate.
Before asking for quotes, count:
checked suitcases;
cabin cases;
handbags and backpacks;
golf clubs or sports equipment;
decorations, costumes and gifts;
mobility equipment;
anything bought in Spain that will need space on the return.
Send the complete list to the company. “Normal luggage” is too vague for a group booking.
If the property will not be ready when the flight arrives, decide where the cases will go. The transfer driver is unlikely to wait for several hours while the group has lunch.
Booking the return to Málaga Airport
Arrange the return with the outward transfer if possible. It is easier to check both addresses, passenger numbers and luggage requirements in one conversation.
Start with the airline's recommended airport arrival time, then add the road journey, a realistic traffic allowance and enough time to load the vehicle. Do not base the pickup on the fastest outward journey.
Before the final morning, reconfirm:
the pickup time and map pin;
the driver or dispatch contact number;
passenger and luggage numbers;
any outstanding payment;
access instructions for the villa or urbanisation;
whether everyone must wait outside;
what to do if the vehicle has not arrived at the agreed time.
Give one person responsibility for checking the rooms, counting passengers and making sure no passports have been left in a safe. The driver should not be expected to wait while several people finish packing.
